SCARBOROUGH (WGME) -- Electric car owners in southern Maine should now have a more reliable place to charge up.

Electrify America, which has one of the largest EV charging networks in the country, recently replaced it bank of charges in Scarborough.

It comes 5 months after the CBS13 I-team first highlighted reliability concerns with the previous charges, which were impacting drivers.

The bank of chargers, which is located in a Walmart parking lot, have now been upgraded to "hyper fast" charges. Electrify America said they're the "newest generation" and "are purpose-built to meet current and future demands for charging infrastructure."

Back in May, a number of EV drivers reached out to the I-Team after becoming frustrated with the malfunctioning chargers and long wait times for the chargers that were working.

Most of those drivers were part of a 2-year free charging plan offered by Electrify America through the purchase of their electric vehicle. It was an offer those drivers claimed they couldn't take advance of because of the reliability issues.

The hope now is these new chargers will cut down on the maintenance issues that caused the previous chargers to go out of service.

While the new chargers had "unavailable" signs illuminated when the I-Team visited the location on Wednesday, Electrify American says they were all fully functional as of 10 a.m. on Thursday.
