Gap Road in Sunbury will reopen to traffic on 30 September after 4 months of work to remove the dangerous and congested level crossing and build a new rail bridge and road underpass.

On Sunday 18 September locals had a sneak peek at the soon-to-be-reopened road at a Community Day, with live entertainment, giveaways, a free sausage sizzle, stalls from local businesses and more.

Around 2000 people attended, taking the opportunity to walk along the new road surface and under the rail bridge, and see the bridge artwork by Sunbury artist and proud Yorta Yorta, Gunaikurnai and Gunditjmara woman Teena Moffatt, who was in attendance.

Crews removed the Gap Road boom gates in June, built the new rail bridge by July and then excavated more than 25,000 cubic metres of soil to build the new road underpass.

The team is now putting the finishing touches on the cycling and walking paths on either side of the road, to safely connect this growing community.

After the road opens, landscaping and other minor project works will continue into 2023.

Gap Road will be the fourth level crossing on the Sunbury Line to be removed, with another 2 to go in Calder Park – easing congestion and reducing travel times.

The Victorian Government is removing 85 level crossings across Melbourne by 2025, with Gap Road marking the 67th level crossing gone for good.
