Nov. 6, 1949, in The Star: Results of a parking meter survey conducted by the Chamber of Commerce show that Anniston merchants are overwhelmingly in favor of installing the time measurement devices. Seventy-two merchants voted in favor of parking meters while only eight returned a negative vote. Six were undecided. Also this date: Amid the brilliant red-and-white decorations and interesting exhibits at Jacksonville State Teachers College yesterday, classmates of former years and students of the present term joined in a gala homecoming celebration. Miss Bonnie Cobb was crowned “Miss Homecoming” during halftime at the football game last night. Additionally: Anniston’s already low coal supply is dwindling rapidly and the next few days should see the end of it. Asked how much coal they had left from last night, local dealers estimated from “a few minutes” to four or five days. Conflict between miners and owners, resulting in a work stoppage for the past 48 days, has caused the national shortage.
Nov. 6, 1999, in The Star: Some Anniston police officers are threatening off-duty picketing and resignations if their pay is not increased soon. Officers were first angered after a promised pay raise was yanked at the last minute last month, further infuriating a department that has a high turnover rate and is one of the lowest-paid in the state for its size. The situation became worse a couple of days ago when police learned the city intends to wait for an outside consulting firm to evaluate the department before considering any pay increase.
