STATE COLLEGE — Free holiday parking will return to downtown State College for an extended time. State College Borough Council approved the Downtown State College Improvement District’s request for the annual holiday parking program during its meeting on Monday, Oct. 21.
Beginning on Monday, Nov. 25, free parking in State College parking garages will be extended from 30 minutes to two hours. Along with this, courtesy cards will be given out to forgive as many as three meter violations at street meters and municipal parking lots. Street meters and lot parking will be free after 5 p.m.
However, there are a few uncertainties this year regarding the free parking.
From Friday, Nov. 29, to Sunday, Dec. 1, parking will be $2.25 per hour due to Penn State’s home game against the University of Maryland on Saturday, Nov. 30.
How the Nittany Lions perform will determine when free parking will return to downtown. If Penn State hosts a playoff game, free parking will return on Monday, Dec. 23. However, if they do not host a playoff game, free parking will return on Saturday, Dec. 21, and end on Saturday, Jan. 4.
The free parking is set up by DSCID. An organization whose goal is to promote State College’s downtown area and show residents of Centre County that is not only a place for students, but community members of all ages.
“We develop community events, programs and initiatives; we advance physical improvements, creative placemaking and clean inviting streetscapes; we are a trusted resource for our constituents,” DSCID’s website said.
