Reduced hours for free parking at meters in Tucson could be cut by early next year, under a proposal being considered by the city.

The period for free parking at Tucson parking meters could be shrinking.

Parking meters are currently free after 5 p.m. weekdays as well as all day on weekends.

But a proposal being considered by the city could extend the pay window to 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Sunday would stay free.

The proposed changes by the city's Department of Transportation and Mobility could take place as soon as early next year, according to a news release.

Tucson has more than 1,800 metered parking spaces, mostly downtown.

Two "virtual open houses" are planned by the department to get reaction to the proposal.

The first meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. The second meeting is set for 5:30 p.m. Oct. 29.
