NC500 campervan tourists slammed over 'disgusting' act

TOURISTS taking the scenic route around Scotland on the NC500 have been slammed

TOURISTS taking the scenic route around Scotland on the NC500 have been slammed over a 'disgusting' act - but

Road trippers have already been blasted after some were spotted speeding, littering, and causing damage to the environment.

Popular route hotspots including Durness have been heavily impacted amid the staycation boom during the pandemic.

In the more remote parts, the road networks haven't been able to cope with the number of vehicles along the NC500.

Highland councillor Margaret Paterson said that "people trashing our beautiful countryside makes me so angry."

But one camper's latest act as been called out after it left some locals furious, while others defended the action.

A traveller staying at a hotel in Kinlochbervie, which is a village in the north west of Sutherland, in the Highlands, was caught letting their grey-water waste drain inside the car park.

And with no rain during Scotland's month-long heatwave, there was no water to wash it away.

Sharing a photo of the mess left in the hotel car park on Facebook, a local said: "These people decided to dump their grey waste in the carpark of the Kinlochbervie Hotel this evening.

"It hasn't rained here today."

Users flocked to the comments to slam the camper for their actions.

One person said: "Disgusting, it's people like those that give us other tourers a bad name. Totally disappointed it's a VW traveller, believe me we are not all like this".

Another added: "We’re just back from our NC500 adventure, I have to say I witnessed campers and Mohos emptying their grey water in public spaces on several occasions.

"Sadly I don't think it's uncommon and there's little can be done to dissuade this kind of thing.

"They obviously think it's an ok thing to do as it's not like they can disguise the fact it's come from their van…. Folk need educated."

Someone else wrote: "Our old VW didn't have a grey water tank fitted which is why we always had a bowl under the outlet just in case the bowl in the sink didn't catch everything. We were meticulous about how we disposed of ours - and it was always in a chemical waste site.

"This is appalling behaviour, and the people making excuses for it need to give their heads a wobble."

A fourth chimed in: "Please understand, that the disposal of grey waste in Scotland is treated the same as raw sewage by the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA).

"Just because you can pour it wherever you want in England, doesn't mean you can do so here."

But others have flocked to the post to defend the camper, with many calling out the poster for jumping to conclusions.

A user said: "Did you actually witness this happening... or have you just assumed? It could be a van parked up with wheelclamp on and pipe burst or fault.

"That happened to me. Total accident whilst I was out for the day with a burst hose. I'm glad I wasn't named and shamed for an accident!!"

A second pointed out: "There may be a host of other reasons for the puddle, burst radiator, fresh water tank or hose fault etc. You’d have been better to speak to the driver first before posting this".

Another added: "Before the linch mob assembles, there may be a host of other reasons for the puddle, burst radiator, fresh water tank or hose fault etc. You’d have been better to speak to the driver first before posting this".

And a fourth person wrote: "Maybe their fresh water was leaking, a friendly knock to tell them so they don't leave without fresh water would have been more helpful."
