ZUNHEBOTO, NOVEMBER 5 (MExN): Zunheboto Town Council (ZTC) took a significant step towards improving traffic regulation with the official launch of its vehicle parking management initiative on November 5. The event, held at the DC Office Junction, marked the beginning of a new system designed to streamline traffic and enhance the town's appeal to visitors.
A press release informed that the launch ceremony was chaired by Kakishe Zhimo, Councillor and ZTC In-charge of Traffic Regulation, with a keynote address delivered by Keyirangding Hegui, NCS, Additional Deputy Commissioner and Executive Officer of ZTC.
In his address, Hegui highlighted the impact of the recent Urban Local Body (ULB) elections and the empowerment of new Councillors under the Nagaland Municipal Act 2023. He emphasized that the vehicle parking initiative was a vital part of the town’s ongoing transformation. “This initiative is our first ambassador for the town,” said Hegui, explaining that the cleanliness and traffic management of a place often shape tourists' first impressions. He expressed confidence that the support of both the Councillors and the citizens would lead to a positive change in the town’s infrastructure.
Hegui also assured the public that the revenue generated from the parking fees would be reinvested into the development of Zunheboto, with an emphasis on transparency and accountability. Drawing comparisons with similar schemes in Dimapur and Kohima, he expressed hope that Zunheboto residents would embrace the system in the same spirit of cooperation.
He acknowledged the efforts of the committee members and Councillors involved in the project and urged the public to be patient during the initial phase. “While some inconvenience may arise as the system is put in place, the long-term benefits will far outweigh the short-term challenges,” he added.
Sukhalu Chishi, SDO Civil, also spoke at the event, underscoring the importance of a collective effort to improve the welfare of Zunheboto’s citizens. “We must work not for personal gain, but for the overall benefit of the people,” he stated. Chishi emphasized the need for humility and responsibility in carrying out civic duties, despite potential criticism.
The ceremony concluded with the official flagging off of the parking management and tax collection initiative by Keyirangding Hegui, who, under the authority granted by the Nagaland Municipal Act, will oversee the implementation of the system. The new parking regulations will be enforced in accordance with the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988, with the support of local police forces.
Herato Sukhalu, Chairperson of the Zunheboto Town Council, delivered the vote of thanks at the conclusion of the event. She reiterated the importance of unity among all stakeholders in ensuring the success of the initiative and assured the public that the system would be operated with full transparency and accountability.
